Paintings Group: Seamless Solutions - Treating a contemporary painting with agarose gel

This presentation describes the rationale and processes for the treatment of Timescape 00:30 which is one of a series of abstract paintings by British artist Darren Almond

Timescape 00:30, 2016, one of a series of abstract paintings by British artist Darren Almond, explores Almond’s preoccupation with time and space.

The painting is composed of water resoluble acrylic paint and gouache on an aluminium panel. Damaged by rain during loan, multiple drip marks destroyed the intended effect of receding space, rendering it unexhibitable. This presentation describes the rationale and processes for its treatment using large plates of agarose gel over the entire painted surface. While the testing phase took many months, the treatment was carried out in a single day. (co-authors: Anna Cooper, Donatella Banti and Julia Nagle*)
