Fully funded internships

Safeguarding Skills for the Future

The Fully Funded Internship Programme, managed by Icon, has been made possible through a dedicated partnership of six heritage sector funders - The Anna Plowden Trust, The Idlewild Trust, The Julia Rausing Trust, The National Manuscripts Conservation Trust, The Pilgrim Trust, and The Radcliffe Trust.

The funding has been made available to support the development of skills in areas of conservation practice that are at risk. The programme enables early-career conservation professionals to develop their technical abilities and deepen their understanding of conservation practice and theory, helping them to kick-start their careers in conservation.

Funding and Management Options

This fully-funded programme provides £25,000 to support the delivery of the internship. Hosts can choose from two management options:

Self-Managed

The funding is paid directly to the host institution who will be responsible for all aspects of delivering the internship.

This is expected to cover:

  • £20,000 must be allocated to the intern's bursary.
  • £5,000 to cover enrichment opportunities for the intern. For example to allow them to attend conferences, training or engage with networking opportunities.

Icon-Managed

The funding can be paid directly to Icon or the host institution. The internship will be run as part of the 'Icon Internship' programme.

The Icon Internship Programme is a structured internship placement offering emerging professionals an invaluable opportunity to develop their careers, engage with professional networks and of course to develop practical knowledge by learning from highly experienced conservation professionals. Key elements of the programme include:

  • The intern receives a tax-free stipend of £20,000 (equivalent to a salary of £24,000). This is paid and managed by Icon.
  • A dedicated Intern Advisor will meet with the intern to take them through a structured programme to support their understanding of the Icon Professional Standards and to guide them in their continuing professional development.
  • Support for the supervisor and the host organisation throughout the placement.

Hosts may also opt for Icon to manage the recruitment process for an additional fee of £1,000 + VAT

Placement Requirements
  • Host organisations must be based in the UK.
  • Placements can be 3, 6, or 12 months in duration, depending on the projects available and the host's capacity. 12 month opportunities are preferred.
  • Public and private sector organisations are welcome to apply, provided they have appropriate insurance and robust health and safety measures in place.
How to Apply

Funding opportunities for host organisations are announced periodically, and applications are welcomed when each call opens.
