New digest of Coronavirus business support

The results of Icon’s recent Coronavirus survey suggested a need for further clarity on available government business support and advice for conservators. Icon has created a new business support hub summarising the key support options.

The survey asked conservators to share how they had been affected by the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and about their feelings about the future financial health of their organisations and businesses. Over half of the respondents to the survey described the pandemic as presenting moderate risk to the medium-term viability of their business or organisation, though they expressed hope to be able to continue to operate if the negative impacts are successfully mitigated.

However, when asked which financial support measures they expected to access to mitigate effects, 55 percent of respondents said they are awaiting further clarification of government support. One contributor called for a “less complicated system” while another said “clearer advice” is needed.

The demand for greater clarity appears to be mirrored by the wider heritage sector. Historic England’s survey of businesses and organisations across heritage fields (including archaeology, gardens, landscapes and historic buildings) showed similar results, with more than 50 percent of respondents stating they were waiting for clarification of government support measures.

The findings confirm Icon’s view that there is significant demand for more business support advice to help people navigate and access different support options. We continue to highlight this need with decision makers through our lobbying and advocacy work.

In response to the results, we have compiled a digest of available support from government and their arms-length bodies. Icon hopes the resource will help simplify the process of finding information and accessing support measures.

We are aware that there are still many who fall between the gaps of existing support schemes, such as sole directors of limited companies and newly self-employed workers, and continue to lobby for comprehensive support to ensure that no one is left behind. We're making this case by collecting case studies and evidence - if you would like to share your experience with us, please write to us
