Hirst Conservation are looking to recruit a Conservation Scientist / Architectural Paint Researcher to join their team. 

Hirst Conservation is an established, thriving business operating in all aspects of architectural conservation for over 30 years. Active in a broad range of specialisms including stone, plaster, decorative surfaces, paintings, gilding and architectural paint research.

We are looking for a candidate to join our busy research department based at our Lincolnshire offices, but with the ability to work nationally and, occasionally, internationally.

Paint research is a fascinating field that can help to understand the development of a building or feature and forms a core activity of our business. Projects can vary from exterior built heritage such as parks, gardens and monuments, the exterior of buildings or the investigation of interiors.

About the Role

This is an exciting role giving the opportunity to develop skills alongside experienced and accredited conservators and paint researchers in an established multi-disciplinary company. The role requires but is not limited to:

Site work: Our projects can be anywhere in the UK with occasional international travel; time will be split between our workshop and offices in Lincolnshire and site. Depending on the location and duration of the project overnight stays are occasionally required, therefore an ability to be flexible with working hours is essential. Working on construction sites is frequently required, the work includes working at heights from scaffolds and mobile platforms. Site work may also require work on sites of cultural sensitivity.

Analysis: Preparation of samples and technical analysis, including microscopical assessment of samples, as well as chemical testing. Training will be provided on all aspects of our in-house procedures and equipment.

Documentation: Including recording of analysis findings, interpretation of paint archaeology and creation of detailed reports detailing the results of technical analysis. You may be required to undertake digital recreations of schemes using Adobe Photoshop.

Health & Safety Compliance: You will be expected to conform to all health and safety requirements and will be required to obtain a CSCS card.

Client Liaison: Architectural paint research is a client facing role; you will be responsible for representing the company on site, as well as for discussing and presenting results of research and treatment options with stakeholders.

Pricing and Project Management: Dependant on experience and knowledge gained, to act as project manager to small scale projects liaising with and reporting to team leader / senior conservator / conservation manager / client as required. The work is varied and paint research projects often run alongside other projects so the ability to programme and prioritise work schedules in multiple work streams is essential.

About You 

A background in conservation, archaeology, traditional architectural decoration and/or science is required, as is a passion for built heritage and historic decoration. Working with listed buildings or an awareness of legislation relating to listed buildings is desirable.

Research and analysis experience, including sample preparation, microscopy and interpretation is required.

Architectural paint research and material analysis is a challenging field that demands an inquisitive, analytical mind with good observational skills and attention to detail, including colour awareness, dexterity and logic reasoning. An organised and methodical approach to work is essential, as is a willingness to contribute to and draw on existing research and understanding to enhance project deliverables and professional standards. You should be able to demonstrate the capability of successfully managing multiple work streams and large data sets.

The role can be physically demanding and candidates should be willing and able to work at height from scaffolding or mobile platforms. Existing CSCS, Pasma or IPAF qualifications an advantage however training will be provided. Documentation forms a core part of our work and you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office. A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is desirable.

You will be comfortable working as part of a team and under your own direction, taking an active role in all training, team meetings, project planning and departmental development as appropriate.

Whilst all training and support will be given the candidate will be expected to undertake additional reading to enhance and support their learning and personal development. CPD support will be offered alongside opportunities for further training as appropriate.
