Apply to become an ‘Ordinary Member’ of Icon’s Conferences Committee

The Icon Conferences Committee was set up by Icon’s Board of Trustees in 2021 to ensure that large conferences and events organised by Icon, including those organised by our volunteer led groups and networks, are of high quality and provide effective support for members and the wider conservation community.

It does this by providing advice and guidance to ensure events are supported by a sound business case so that they are financially viable; accessible to all participants; well planned and managed, and actively support Icon’s strategic plan.

Current committee members include: Rebecca Ellison ACR (Chair), Ina Hergert (Vice Chair), Alexandra Gent ACR, Ashley Lingle ACR and Kim Thüsing.

This role comes at an exciting time as the Committee have just started to look at the next big Icon Conference. Over their next few meetings, they will be considering how regularly it should take place, the format (i.e. in person, remote or hybrid), how the theme will be chosen as well as considering how all practical elements of the event will be delivered.

The role and the commitment

Ordinary committee members are expected to be active participants in the work of the group. The Conferences committee is a wonderful and open group; the important thing is that we want to ensure that there are a wide range of views that feed into the decision making process - that means we want all Icon members to feel that they can put themselves forward, regardless of material specialism, working environment or career stage. Taking part in the committee is an excellent professional development opportunity for all members.

Practicalities

  • The Conferences Committee meets four times a year (however this may be more regular in the lead up to an event).
  • Ordinary committee members are appointed for an initial term of three years with the possibility of extending it for a further two years.
  • A willingness to be an active participant and help shape the future of Icon’s major conferences and events is essential.

Knowledge, skills and experience that would be useful for this role include:

  • A clear understanding of Icon’s purpose and strategic aims.
  • A good knowledge of CPD and Icon’s training events programme (you may have already run events as part of a group or network)
  • Good communication skills, the ability to manage information and provide feedback.
  • An understanding of marketing and pomotional activies.
