Policy and advocacy

Championing conservation through policy and advocacy

Icon’s policy and advocacy work sits at the heart of our mission. By representing the interests of the conservation sector and its professionals, we strive to improve long‑term outcomes for heritage. We do this by promoting high standards of practice, supporting the development of a strong and skilled workforce, and strengthening public understanding of the value of conservation.

Policy refers to the agreed‑upon processes or ideas that guide decision‑making. Advocacy is the means by which we ensure that policy is shaped in ways that reflect the needs of conservation and the conservation profession. It is not only Government that sets policy; all organisations develop processes, procedures, standards, and guidance that influence how things are done. This means Icon must operate at a range of levels to drive meaningful change that supports our members and protects collections.

We deliver policy and advocacy through:

  • Developing a strong research base that supports evidence‑informed decision‑making, guides strategic direction, and shapes our campaigning.
  • Responding to consultations to ensure the needs, expertise, and perspectives of the conservation sector are effectively represented.
  • Working with and strengthening our stakeholder forums so that the value and requirements of the profession are widely understood.
  • Leading effective campaigns that underpin all our activities and ensure consistent, impactful messaging.
  • Providing platforms for conservators to share their views and ensuring those views are represented in policy discussions at every level.

Success in this area can take many forms. While we aim to have a seat at the table when policy is being defined, much of our most impactful work occurs on the margins. A positive policy outcome might be as simple as altering a single word in a document - yet that small change can deliver meaningful benefits for both individuals and the wider conservation sector.
