We invite you to join us for ‘Modern Makers and Antiquaries’ at Burlington House on 22nd October: a day of displays and demonstrations which showcases historically informed crafts, from illumination to fan-making.
This event demonstrates the continuity of craft skills as intangible heritage, considering how to conserve those insights and skills for the benefit of future generations of antiquaries and craftspeople. We will be hearing from:
Victoria Ajoku: fan-maker, performer, and founder of ‘Fan the Glory with Tori’
Sarah Davis: multi-media artist specialising in wood carving, miniature painting, and illumination
Sue Heaser FSA: author, illustrator, and jewellery maker with expertise in silversmithing, enamelling, and lampwork
Sarah Le Breton: basket-maker and designer who works with traditional willow and rush weaving techniques
Alison Proctor: nature-inspired ceramicist who creates wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces
The Society's events programme explores interdisciplinary approaches to material culture. Our full programme of lectures, conferences, and displays is available on our website: https://www.sal.org.uk/events
This will be a fresh style of event at the Antiquaries’ headquarters in London, and it brings together modern makers and craftspeople who, in their working and creating, are informed by and follow on from historical techniques and expertise. Their current workings allow us to better inform our historical, archaeological, societal and antiquarian research and understanding, as well as giving a better understanding of the needs for conservation of our shared and sometimes intangible heritages.
During the day our makers will practically demonstrate and lecture on their particular field of work and show how, backed by historical research and the use of traditional materials and techniques, they continue to deploy the skills of past makers. The demonstrations will be interactive and will be followed by presentations and a round-table discussion by the makers. We will be featuring the work of our contributors in forthcoming issues of Salon, including fan-maker Victoria Ajoku, illuminator Sarah Davis, archaeologist Sue Heaser FSA, basket-maker Sarah Le Breton, and ceramicist Alison Proctor.
