In this webinar, Agnes and Anna will present their experiences with the various methods for risk assessment and management in collection care, from risk registers and matrices to CPRAM and the ABC method. They will explain why they felt a need to develop the QuiskScan, a quick risk scan that serves as a stepping stone to more comprehensive approaches, and illustrate how it works and how they apply it in practice. After the presentation there is time for questions and discussion.

Presenters

Dr Agnes Brokerhof studied Chemistry and Art History at Leiden University, the Netherlands. She is senior conservation scientist and consultant at the Heritage Laboratory of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Her area of expertise is value management, risk management and preventive conservation. From 2003-2013 she was one of the organizers and teachers in the ICCROM-CCI-RCE courses ‘Reducing risks to Collections’ and still teaches courses and workshops on risk management in the Netherlands and abroad. She applies the principles of risk-based decision making in her consultancy to collection managers such as guiding them through the process of developing lighting policies. Together with Anna she developed the QuiskScan method for risk assessment.

Dr Anna Bülow apprenticed as a bookbinder in Germany before graduating with a degree in paper conservation from the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Kunst und Konservierung in Bern, Switzerland. She worked as a research fellow at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa and graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada with an MA. In 2002 she completed her PhD at De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, specializing in preventive conservation. As Head of Preservation at The National Archives in London, UK she conducted a large collection risk management study which she later tried at the British Museum where she worked as Head of Conservation. She is currently Head of Collection Management at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Netherlands and has recently concluded two terms as working group coordinator of the ICOM-CC Preventive Conservation Group.
