Ceramics & Glass Group: Presentation Re Imagined

Meet, network, explore The Conservation Studio and discover the collection at Knole House

The Ceramics and Glass Group would like to welcome you to our Annual Autumn meeting, which will include a morning of presentations, a quick AGM and report from your Committee Officers, followed by the opportunity to attend organised tours of the Conservation Studio, as well as walk around Knole House and Park.

Presentations will include three exciting case studies of very different approaches to conserving objects for new exhibition opportunities.

Our first speaker will be Tiago Oliveira who will talk to us about his recent work for the Courtauld Institute, “Combining mimetic and discernible retouching on two Majolica pieces for display”. We will follow this with an interesting presentation from Felicity Bolton on the conservation of the Ornamental Gardens. These are two delightful, delicate decorative pieces, property of Sissinghurst Castle Gardens which are made from semi precious jewels, coral, glass, cloisonne and metal. Finally, our mornings’ presentations will finish with Ros Hodges presenting her case study of the conservation of two large Wedgwood Basalt Figures that normally reside at the Vyne in Hampshire but required considerable conservation for a long overseas journey to the Classic Black Exhibition at the MINT Museum, North Carolina, USA.

Our morning will finish with a brief AGM, the voting for which will have been carried out online, so we will be giving a quick update on our activities this year and inviting you to tell us what you would like to see us organise going into next year. We will also be introducing new Committee members who you may not have met.

We will then break for lunch, bring a picnic, or visit the Brewhouse where you can purchase a range of hot and cold food.

The afternoon will include private tours of the newly refurbished Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio, a wonderful workspace in a magnificent historic barn. You will also be free to look at the Knole House Collections, enter the Gate House and walk in the park if you want fresh air and a chance to stretch you legs before returning home.

Sevenoaks is on a main rail line out of London with frequent services. Car parking is available at £5.00 per car and needs to be booked online with the Property before you arrive.
