I am a book and paper conservator and offer a wide range of conservation and preservation services for libraries, heritage organisations, archives and private clients.
I work with Ian Watson, another accredited conservator in a purpose-built secure studio in Sussex. Our range of services include: practical conservation on manuscripts, printed books, pamphlets, albums, maps, posters and prints; preservation assessment surveys for all types of collections; in-situ book cleaning and remedial treatments; training and courses for volunteers and heritage staff. We also produce toolkits for cleaning, labelling, monitoring and preservation of mixed collections.
Exam records from 1933–1940 had a broken post binding, with string causing damage, creasing, and folds. As an active archive, access was essential without losing historical character. The client requested retaining the original boards, adding complexity to the project.
A 15th-century Christian devotional book, once owned by a cardinal, with vellum text and fine gold leaf illuminations, later rebound in full leather. Worn from use, it was loaned for exhibition. Stabilisation of the textblock and media was needed to protect the book and its contents before display.
These Charters established the veterinary profession and incorporated the College. Poor storage had caused creasing and staining to the vellum. The project aimed to relax the documents, prepare the 1844 Charter for conservation framing, and rehouse the 1876 Charter in a suitable box for safe, accessible storage.
