An Introduction to the Importance of Mounting and Display for Emerging Professionals

Join us at the V&A for an introduction to the significance of mounting and display in a museum setting. Frances Hartog, senior conservator will lead the morning which will start with a tour of the galleries including the Medieval & Renaissance Galleries. These house a wide range of objects such as tapestries, ecclesiastical vestments, early items of clothing and very fragile textile fragments. For some objects, the mounts can be an integral part of the conservation. Moving to the Middle Eastern and Indian gallery more traditional methods are for used mounting and display which offer the opportunity to discuss attachment methods. Frances is keen to illustrate the practicalities of display. She will also discuss how conservators can collaborate with designers and curators, listening to their needs, while being an advocate for the object.

The event is on the morning of 22nd September, arrival at 10am for a 10.30 start. There is no charge, but places are limited. It is anticipated the tour will take an hour and a half with time for some discission and finishing around 12.30.

Those attendees who are emerging professionals can apply for a travel grant from the Anna Plowden Trust/Clothworkers' Foundation CPD Grants fund which supports practising conservators in the UK by contributing towards the cost of short courses and attending conferences. For anyone wishing to try for a grant, the remaining application deadline for 2023 is September 9th www.annaplowdentrust.org.uk. Please check with the trust how far ahead of an event an application needs to be made.
