In Focus: Liverpool Conservation Talks - Wrapping up sustainably

Collection Care’s ‘In Focus: Liverpool Conservation Talks, conservation themed 30-minute lunchtime talks held every second Wednesday of the month

Wrapping up Sustainably: how to reduce the use of polythene when wrapping historic objects for transport.

This talk introduces the UK Museums and Heritage Sustainable Packing Group, a collaborative network of museum and heritage professionals working to reduce the environmental impact of packing practices across the sector.

The talk will review the group’s research into single-use polythene — commonly used as a soft wrapping material for objects in storage and transit. Although polythene has many qualities, it also presents significant sustainability challenges.

Drawing on trials and practical case studies, the talk will assess opportunities for reduction or reuse. It will also discuss the balance between risk management, object safety and environmental responsibility — a challenge familiar to many working in collections care.

Finally, the talk will outline future areas for research and collaboration, inviting wider engagement from across the sector as museums continue to rethink materials, processes and long-term sustainability strategies.

The talk will take place on Wednesday 11th March at 1.00-1.30pm. There will be time set aside for Q&As following the talk.
