6:30PM | Professor Alison Harley, Bernat Klein Foundation - What Makes a Legacy?

In this keynote talk, Alison Harley will share the significant moments from which Bernat Klein’s legacy has been developed into the Bernat Klein Foundation, and is also shaping the current partnership with National Trust Scotland and Scottish Historic Buildings Trust in the restoration of the Bernat Klein Studio.

Bernat Klein created an archive of work, which he collected throughout his career as a textile designer, producer and colourist. This primary collection, held by National Museums Scotland is a rich resource for new ideas inspired by Klein’s beautifully crafted textiles. Klein also wrote two books in which he expressed his ideas and observations about creativity and design - Eye for Colour (1965) and Design Matters (1975). Locating himself in the Scottish Borders from the early 1950s, Klein commissioned his family home High Sunderland (1957) and the Klein Studio (1972) both designed by modernist architect Peter Womersley.

The breadth of these creative endeavours underscores Klein's exceptional contribution to international design movements, then and now.
