Does trap checking show a successful IPM programme? Looking at IPM in practice at Birmingham Museums Trust
Since 2003, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has formed an important part of collections care at Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT). Over more than two decades the programme has seen infestations, the discovery of unusual insect species, varying levels of staff engagement and the development of a successful long-running volunteer project. This talk by Jane Thompson-Webb, Head of Collection Services at Birmingham Museums Trust and Chair of the ICON Care of Collections Group, raises important questions about what “good” or “bad” IPM looks like in practice. Does the absence of regular trap checking indicate a failing programme, for example?
This talk will explore the history and development of IPM at BMT, outlining the successes, challenges and realities of maintaining a long-term programme within a busy museum environment. It will reflect on how IPM operates across the organisation and consider whether the current approach is good, imperfect or something in between.
The talk will take place on Wednesday 10th June at 1.00-1.30pm. There will be time set aside for Q&As following the talk.
