Lecture 6 - Caroline Bendix ACR

Conserving the National Trust's libraries

Caroline Bendix ACR, Library conservator

Overview

The National Trust has a collection of some 350,000 titles in 160 locations across the UK. There is no conservator on the staff, so the conservation is carried out by means of preventive conservation, training of property staff and volunteer in a range of skills and some work by freelance conservators. The nature of the buildings and the need for properties to be open to visitors all year round means that there are many challenges, some of which differ from those in other institutions, and the conservation of the libraries has to take these into account.

This talk was delivered to the Independent Paper Conservators' Group in 2018
