Overview

Using the Wellcome library’s digitised negatives of Victorian photographer John Thomson as a test case, this paper will describe a simple, non-invasive method for producing process accurate facsimiles of fragile historical photographic material.
It will also give an overview of some of the history and challenges behind the production of photographic surrogates.

About the speaker

Louis Porter is a photographer and artist based in London. From 2014-2019 he worked in the photography department of the London College of Communication, where he established a research space into historical photographic processes. He has exhibited his work and undertaken artist residencies internationally, most recently he was the 2019 Artist in Resident at the Awagami paper factory in Japan. He currently runs the photography studio at The Postal Museum in London, is part of the Imaging Standards Special Interests Group of the Association of Heritage and Fine Art Photography and is a member of the Artist's Book Cooperative.
