September is Icon's new Student Month!

There’s some excitement brewing at Icon this month!

It's the start of a new academic year, and Icon is ready to offer a warm welcome to the latest brigade of conservation students as they take up their places and make their start.

The pandemic brought new challenges to conservation education, and so student engagement and involvement with the wider sector has never been more critical to help ensure future career success.

With this in mind, in 2021 Icon has put together more support resources and initiatives for Icon Student members than ever before – making this September Icon’s first ever ‘Student month’!

Community, inclusion and ‘staying in the know’

Icon Student members have always had the full run of Icon membership benefits – seeing the latest news and reports from across the sector via Icon publications, accessing all the latest job opportunities via Icon member e-bulletins, and getting involved in the wider conservation community via Icon Groups, Networks and other special interest boards and committees.

Many of these venues profile a swift route for young professionals to raise their profiles, to start building their professional networks and engage with developments across the sector.

Within this, the pandemic lockdown demonstrated the global reach of online platforms in conservation, so with this in mind we’ve put even more resources within reach of Icon Student members.

New Icon Student Project Gallery

First up is Icon’s new Student Project Gallery.  This has been designed to provide Icon Student Members with the perfect place to get their best work noticed, wherever they may be across the globe.

Simply by logging-in to the members’ area on the Icon website, Icon Student members can create project profiles with text and images to bring their hard work out of the studio and into the wider world at large on the Icon website.

With a brief biographical sketch, the Icon Student Project Gallery is designed to provide a complete online portfolio that gives Icon Student members the edge they need to make the transition from student to employed conservation professional.

New places on Icon’s Student Mentors Programme

This year, Icon is also launching a new tranche of mentorships to help Icon Student members jumpstart their career planning

Icon’s Student Mentor Programme is offers 25 graduating Icon Student members or entry-level Icon Associate or Pathway members the chance for 1-to-1 support from an experienced Icon-Accredited conservator.

The aim is to support their progression to the working world with a little help from the Icon community, and some 1-on-1 discussion with experienced peers to help them reflect on their options, identify opportunities before them and set the course for their career success.

To get involved, all Icon Student members and entry-level Icon Associate or Pathway members need to do is apply for a place on the scheme.

Updates and new additions to Student Resources page

As the new contingent of conservation students get started, here at Icon we’ll also be giving a refresh to some of our online resources for students, building out more content to directly address support requirements for our conservators-in-training.

With an ever-expanding range of online resources for students and other support materials designed for the conservation community at large, the Icon website has long been a one-stop shop for everything conservation.

But Icon’s new website provides greater capacity for members to interact and plan their careers – with interactive elements in the members area ranging from group discussion boards to personal career development CPD logs to help keep the sector talking and looking forward.

There has never been quite so much on offer for Icon Student members. We’re keen to engage as many as we can, wherever they’re based across the world – and it should be no surprise so we’ve also made it very easy for them to join Icon!

TOP TIP

The Emerging Professionals Network is staging a useful event later this month. ‘The Conservator’s Portfolio’ will set out some of the key things you need to know about putting together that vital career portfolio, and provide interactive space for questions and discussion along the way.
