Archaeology

The Icon Archaeology Group has promoted high standards for the care and conservation of archaeological materials since 1976

The Group was formed in 1976 when conservators working under the umbrella of the former UKIC established a forum for those working with, or with an interest in, the conservation of archaeological artefacts.

The Group's aims are to:

  • Establish and promote high standards for care and conservation of archaeological materials
  • Support the development of skills and knowledge in the conservation and investigation of archaeological materials
  • Provide a forum for communication within the discipline and related organisations
  • Promote care and conservation of archaeological heritage among the public
  • Represent the interests of the archaeological conservation profession

We always love to hear about your conservation projects, big or small and ideas about events. Please contact us using our group email address: [email protected]

The Icon Archaeology group is one of the largest in Icon, currently with nearly 400 members. The committee meets four times a year online. We aim to represent our membership with conservators with varying backgrounds and interests. Each of the committee members has specific roles, described on the committee page.

The focus of the committee in recent years is providing a forum for events, mainly online; many of these are featured on the events page. The other major focus is the fourth edition of First Aid for Finds – see the First Aid for Finds page for updates. We also welcome queries about archaeological conservation issues and problems via our email address (below) and share them with our committee members to canvas ideas and solutions.

We represent Icon on several groups including CIfA, Society for Museum Archaeologists, the Archaeology Forum, the Archaeological Archives Forum and the Icon Group Chairs forum. Some committee members also take part in the Icon initiatives for environmental sustainability and emerging professionals.
