Icon's Textile Group are delighted to announce the lecture The Finishing Touch: The role of the trimmings-maker in the upholstered room.
Continuing with the Textile Group's exploration of upholstered objects and their conservation, this talk will trace the history and use of trimmings in the upholstered room from the early 1600s. Often overlooked in today’s minimalist age, costly fringes, tassels, braids and cords were once in constant demand for practical and decorative use creating colour, texture and style that helped unify the luxury interior. Particular concentration will be given to beds and seat furniture and, in a trade that lacks a comprehensive terminology in English, an explanation will be given of some of the more common historic terms.
