| Lucy Mayes (b. Birmingham, England, 1991) is an artist, educator, and professional pigment maker based at her public studio and shop within the historic Hotwalls Studios in Portsmouth. Her creative practice centers deeply on the pedagogy of pigment making, using the medium to investigate the material, historical, and cultural significance of colour. She is particularly interested in waste-derived manufacturing methods, historical craft methodologies, and material entanglements. Mayes holds a BFA from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford (2014), and an MFA from the Royal College of Art (2016). She is a board member for the non-profit organisation Pigments Revealed International and the author of The Natural Pigment Handbook (David & Charles Publishing, 2025).
