Furniture and Wooden Objects & Gilding and Decorative Surfaces Groups Symposium 2027: Call for papers

The Furniture and Woodwork & Gilding and Decorative Surfaces Groups invite submissions for papers and/or presentations to be presented at our first joint symposium.

Furniture, woodwork, gilding and decorative surfaces are often united within the same object, where questions of material, technique, condition and interpretation seldom fall neatly within a single specialism. This symposium seeks to explore those shared concerns and the exchange between related fields of conservation practice and research.

To build on the success of previous symposia, no fixed theme has been set. Earlier papers have addressed subjects including new and innovative conservation techniques, recent research, and ongoing or otherwise noteworthy projects, including those involving cross-disciplinary collaboration. We also warmly encourage proposals from students and recent graduates.

The event will be held at Holborn House in central London. Holborn House was designed by Stirling prize-nominated 6a architects and featured in Architectural Journal’s ‘top 10’ must-see buildings in London for Open House 2021.

A light buffet-style lunch will be provided at no extra cost.

The deadline for submissions is 31st January 2027

Abstracts should be in the region of 300-500 words long and should aim to provide a concise and coherent synopsis of the proposed presentation. Talks will be around 20 minutes, with added time for discussion after each talk.

Please send abstracts, or any related questions to:

Tickets will be availabe after the finalisation of the programme.

Thank you, we look forward to hearing from you.
