I undertake projects from initial condition assessment and treatment proposals through to practical conservation, working closely with clients and heritage professionals throughout the process.
I have extensive experience in project management, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex conservation projects from initial planning and assessment through to successful completion.
Over the course of my career, I have developed particular expertise in the safe handling and movement of heavy, fragile and complex stone objects. I devise bespoken methods for lifting, handling, packing, deinstallation, transport and reinstallation, working with objects ranging from large-scale monuments and sculpture to highly fragile archaeological material.
Where an object’s size, weight, condition or complexity presents particular challenges, I collaborate with structural engineers and specialist fabricators to develop safe, practical and appropriate solutions for lifting, support, mounting and installation.
I trained at City & Guilds of London Art School, where I later taught Stone Conservation to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In 2015, I completed the International Course on Stone Conservation in Rome, organised by ICCROM and the Getty Conservation Institute.
Sculpture
I provide conservation assessments, treatments, and specialist handling and movement of stone sculpture, working with objects ranging from Roman and medieval works to modern and contemporary pieces. My experience spans private collections and antiquities dealers, the Sculpture Conservation Department at the V&A, churches and cathedrals across the UK, museums and galleries.
Before undertaking any treatment, I take time to understand each object, its history and significance. Direct dialogue with owners, curators and clients helps me develop an informed and appropriate conservation approach for each individual object. All treatments are fully documented and carried out using both traditional and modern materials, informed by current conservation research, best practices, and developments in the field.
Monuments
I specialise in the conservation of monuments in churches, historic buildings and National Trust properties. I understand the requirements of church projects, including the preparation of condition surveys and treatment proposals in accordance with ChurchCare guidelines to support grant and funding applications.
I have developed particular expertise in the dismantling, repair and rebuilding of complex masonry structures, including tombs, monuments and shrines. This can involve moving large and fragile stone elements that are interconnected, cantilevered or built into surrounding walls.
Working safely with these structures requires a thorough understanding of their construction, materials, condition and structural behaviour. Each project is carefully assessed, planned and documented, informed by many years of practical experience to ensure safe dismantling, appropriate treatment and accurate reinstallation.
Mosaics
I conserve mosaics ranging from the Roman period to modern and contemporary designs. My work includes the conservation, lifting and relocation of mosaics.
Each project is individually assessed and documented, with particular attention given to the mosaic’s materials, structural stability, previous interventions and original context.
Objects
I undertake the conservation of stone, concrete, plaster and ceramic objects, ranging from monumental and life-size sculpture to smaller, more delicate pieces, always working to high museum and conservation standards. Regardless of scale or value, every object is approached with the same level of care, attention to detail and respect for its history and significance.
On completion, each project is accompanied by a clear and detailed conservation report, including photographic documentation of the object and the treatment undertaken, together with recommendations for its future care, maintenance and safe handling.Art Handling
Over the years, I have specialised in the lifting and handling of heavy and delicate stone artworks. My experience in museum environments has given me a strong understanding of how to move and pack objects safely in a wide range of settings, including churches, National Trust properties and private estates. Where heavy-lifting equipment, such as cranes, or additional specialist expertise is required, I work closely with experienced art handlers, providing conservation-led advice on the specific requirements and safe handling of the object. Prior to any move, I undertake a thorough condition assessment to identify fragile areas, structural weaknesses and potential risks, and advise on the safest methods of handling, lifting, supporting and transporting the artwork.
