Book and Paper Group: developing metal-free, sulphur-free, sustainable and durable full vegetable-tanned calf leather for bookbinding and restoration

A talk on the status of the development of the leather and ageing analysis by Eric Robert Themmen and René Larsen

The work on the development of a metal- free, sulphur-free, sustainable, durable full vegetable-tanned calf leather is in the final phase. In addition, we have managed to produce a 3,5 mm thick bull croupon using the same tanning system.

Come here from Robert Themmen and René Larsen as they present the work process in the tannery as well as examples of the results of analyses and tests that they use to measure the quality and durability of the leather. These include measurement of metal and sulphur content and standard physical tests. The course and degree of degradation at the microscopic and molecular levels after accelerated aging in dry and moist heat is determined by means of fibre morphological analysis and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The analytical results are compared with corresponding analyses and tests of new commercial leathers as well as with naturally aged historic leather and we present a selection of the most recent of these.
