The Landi Company, based at Burghley House (Stamford), specialises in providing textile conservation services to historic houses, museums, churches, military organisations, and individual clients.

Our services including condition assessments and surveys, interventive treatment, collections care, IPM, annual housekeeping, and display, mounting and storage. The company handles a variety of objects, from the very small to the incredibly large, including tapestries, embroideries, costume and accessories, upholstery, ecclesiastical textiles, lace and white-work, painted textiles, banners, and state beds. Work can be carried out onsite, either behind-the-scenes or in the public eye. We also provide guidance, advice and training on caring for textiles.

Conservation of a 19th Century Tapestry Woven Rug

Consolidation stitching was carried out onto a linen support. Areas of loss were infilled with wool to recreate the design, including replacement warps which were custom dyed and inserted where small holes had formed.

Deep Cleaning Second George State Bed, Burghley House

During Burghley House’s winter closure, the collection is assessed, monitored and cleaned. The State Beds are on a rotation, with a deep clean of the internal textiles every four years.

Rug Wet Cleaning

Wet cleaning a Persian wool rug in the studio’s custom built wash table. Full submersion cleaning using a neutral pH wash solution combined with soil carrier helps to shift and remove ingrained dirt.

Cleaning, Consolidation and Mounting a Columbian Sampler from 1936

After cleaning, the sampler has been mounted onto a bespoke padded board in preparation for framing. Loose threads were realigned and stitched down with laid-couching, ensuring the grain of the sampler was parallel.

Bespoke Storage for an 18th Century Jama

A bespoke storage solution for both transit and long-term storage. An internal bodice support of Plastazone® LD45 padded with polyester wadding to shape, alongside custom shaped pads to reduce movement, maintain shape and prevent creasing. A Plastazote® LD45 lifting board allows access whilst mitigating potential stress on the object.

Biography

Kelly Grimshaw-Oliver ACR

Kelly is a graduate of the MA Conservation of Cultural Heritage programme from the University of Lincoln, where she specialised in textiles. She has undertaken several short-term contracts in textile conservation studios across the UK, as well as overseas. Kelly has a keen interest in tapestries, and since working at The Landi Company has specialised in tapestry conservation. She is currently Secretary of the Icon Private Practice Group and is an Accredited member of Icon.
