My developed understanding of significance, the characteristics of building construction and the nature of how historic building materials are used has been continually developing over the last 25 years of my working life.
My training started in the early nineties and was initially gleaned through hands-on experience, when undertaking what could be seen as an informal apprenticeship. Once deciding this as my career path, I bolstered and contextualised my understanding by studying an MSc/PGDip in Historic Building Conservation in Bournemouth. This academic process allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of the theoretical nature of our interventions, and helped ignite a desire to further my knowledge of a vast and multi-faceted field. I specialise in decorative plaster and stonework to include sculpture, but have a good understanding of most historic building materials.
I became Icon accredited in 2011, a full member of the IHBC in 2017 and an MCIOB chartered construction manager in 2020. Since 2014, I have been working as a Consultant and Specialist Adviser to a large London based contractor specialising in historic building conservation. In 2020 I established Spencer Hall Historic Building Conservation Ltd (SHHBC) and now work for a variety of clients nationwide.
