Opening at the Octagon Gallery on 17 September, the exhibition explores two centuries of scientific discovery, artistic innovation, research and education through a rich and varied selection of artefacts, artworks and specimens. Drawing on collections from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology, the Grant Museum of Zoology, the UCL Art Museum, and UCL's historic and scientific collections, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to encounter objects that have shaped knowledge, challenged ideas and inspired generations.
Among the highlights is the Grant Museum's famous Jar of Moles, one of the institution's most recognisable and frequently discussed objects. Displayed alongside ancient Egyptian artefacts, pioneering scientific instruments, rare archival material and significant works of art, it exemplifies the exhibition's celebration of curiosity and discovery across disciplines.
From archaeological artefacts and delicate works on paper to zoological specimens and historic scientific equipment, each object brings its own conservation considerations and challenges.
