Icon Joins Coalition of Professional Bodies Calling for a Stronger Partnership With Government

Icon joins cross-sector coalition urging Government collaboration to drive growth and reform.

08 Jan 2026

The Institute of Conservation (Icon) has joined a coalition of professional and membership bodies calling on the Government for greater collaboration to support economic growth, boost productivity and reform public services.

The coalition is coordinated by Memcom, the membership organisation for professional bodies and associations, and represents a combined membership of more than one million individually named professionals. The coalition spans business, public services, infrastructure, health, science, engineering, leadership, marketing and safety-critical sectors.

Collectively, professional bodies set and uphold professional standards, accredit skills, support employers and help to improve workforce capability across the UK.

What We Call For

The letter, to which Icon is a co-signatory, is addressed to the Minister for Skills, Baroness Smith of Malvern. It sets out how professional bodies can do more to support Government priorities and highlights our unique role in connecting employers, education and training providers, and individual professionals.

The coalition is calling for a closer working relationship with Government, including the creation of a cross-sector working group to better align professional body activity with Government policies and priorities. The letter also proposes partnership on skills programmes to strengthen the UK workforce and the embedding of professional accreditation within public sector workforce reform.
