Icon joins call for "just and green" recovery

Icon has signed a letter to Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden calling for “a just and green cultural recovery” from the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

17 Jun 2020

The campaign is being led by Julie’s Bicycle, a London-based charity that supports the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability. The letter outlines the "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to create the building blocks for a green deal for culture which puts social justice at its heart:

“We urge government to commit to a rapid, just and green cultural recovery combining targeted public investment, clear policy signals, and implementation of Climate Change Act obligations extended to the Cultural Renewal strategy. We urge that action to protect nature and biodiversity is given the attention it so urgently deserves. And we urge that the singular opportunity to tackle systemic barriers to empowerment that many black and minority people experience, not least across the culture and environment sectors, are prioritised. This last point goes to the heart of a just transition.”

Icon fully endorses the messages made in the letter and calls on Government to address the climate and ecological emergency and the broader context of social and racial justice as we come out of the pandemic.
