Call for Evidence: Revisiting Empowering Collections 2025

The Museums Association is gathering sector-wide feedback to understand how collections practice has evolved since its 2019 Empowering Collections report.

08 Dec 2025

Following the publication of its Empowering Collections report, the Museums Association are inviting voices from across the sector to help review progress and inform future guidance by submitting evidence before December 2025.

The Museums Association 2019 Empowering Collections Report called on museums, funders and policy-makers to take collective action to ensure that museum collections remain empowering, relevant and dynamic.

Six years on, the context in which museums operate has shifted dramatically. The global pandemic and cost-of-living crises has placed severe pressure on the sector, affecting budgets and visitor figures. There is now an increased need for museums to use their collections to support positive change, and a range of new challenges have emerged that must be addressed.

The Museums Association is therefore reviewing the 2019 report and seeking sector-wide evidence to understand where practice has progressed, where it has not, and what new issues are being faced by those working with collections today.

Submit A Response

Museums Association are now encouraging responses from any individuals, either in a paid or volunteer capacity, working with collections. Organisation wide submissions are especially valuable, offering a broader perspective across different collection areas and uses.

Submissions must be made online by Thursday 11 December 2025 via the Museums Association Website. Anyone wishing to be further involved in the consultation can contact Sarah Briggs via [email protected]
