MMG Autumn Series: Access and Preservation: Managing Modern Materials at the Toledo Museum of Art

This talk will share conservation challenges from TMA’s full-scale museum reinstallation project, including the integration of modern materials in mixed displays exposed to natural light, and strategies to increase accessibility while safeguarding preservation standards.

This presentation will draw on case studies from the Toledo Museum of Art’s ongoing reinstallation to explore the practical and ethical challenges of displaying diverse collections within shared spaces.

Topics include the integration of modern materials in mixed displays, the risks and compromises involved in managing objects with differing environmental requirements, designs involving natural light, and the strategies used to increase public accessibility while maintaining preservation standards. These examples highlight the complexities of reconciling curatorial and design visions with conservation practice in a large-scale museum redevelopment project.
