International Academic Projects: Conservation of Globes

Sylvia Sumira ACR will give a brief overview of the history of printed globes and their use.

In this seminar Sylvia Sumira ACR will give a brief overview of the history of printed globes and their use from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.  The method of construction and materials used in their manufacture will be covered. Certain patterns of deterioration and damage occur with globes and these will be looked at. Conservation treatment will be described by looking at several case studies.

There will be a 55min presentation followed by 15min of discussion

Sylvia Sumira ACR is an independent  conservator specialising in globes. She worked in globe conservation at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, for several years and then set up her own studio. She carries out work for museums, libraries and other institutions in Britain and abroad, and also private owners of globes. She is an accredited member of Icon. Her book, ‘The Art and History of Globes’ was published by the British Library a few years ago.
