This seminar will explore applications of chelating agents for cleaning and stain reduction in conservation contexts. Specific topics will include: chemical structures of chelators, the role of chelating agents in cleaning solutions, tailoring chelating solutions to specific substrates, delivery methods, possibilities for ion-selective chelation, health & environmental safety considerations, and economic considerations.

Matthew Cushman is Conservator of Paintings and Affiliated Assistant Professor at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, where he teaches fundamentals of paintings conservation and the application of scientific principles in conservation practice.
