Hidden impressions, new insights into Simone Martini’s Holy Family
For this talk doctoral research student at the University of Cambridge, Kyoko Takemura will be joining us. Kyoko will be taking a close look at the Holy Family, (Christ Discovered in the Temple), a painting from Walker Art Gallery currently being investigated, in partnership with other institutions, by the National Gallery.
Kyoko will explore how advanced 2D and 3D imaging of the gilded background reveals previously unobservable punch mark details (small decorative impressions stamped into the gold background) offering new insights into Simone Martini’s late working practices and medieval punch tools of which little research has been carried out due to lack of surviving examples.
The talk will take place on Wednesday 11th Feburary at 1.00-1.30pm. There will be time set aside for Q&As following the talk.
