The People’s History Museum (PHM) holds an eclectic array of historic and contemporary collections including the largest and most important collection of trade union and political banners in the world. Jenny van Enckevort ACR is a qualified conservator with expertise in textile conservation and manages the conservation studio at PHM. In this talk, Jenny will introduce the collection at PHM and explore some of the challenges involved in caring for traditional, large painted trade union banners, as well as the more contemporary protest banners. She’ll share some of the techniques used to conserve these unique objects and how they’re displayed in the museum. Jenny will also offer practical tips on packing, handling, and storing banners — valuable advice for anyone who might be responsible for their care.
The talk will take place on Wednesday 12th November at 1.00-1.30pm. There will be time set aside for Q&As following the talk.
