Join Nora Brockmann and Caterina Celada Prior as they present a fascinating discussion on some of the preparatory and conservation work that was undertaken for the V&A’s exhibition, Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art.
The exhibition combined historic garments from the V&A’s own collection, high profile institutional lenders, private lenders, and pieces lent from the fashion house directly.
This talk will discuss the development of several mounts for hats, gloves and sweaters, all of which had to be adaptable and pre-fabricated for a quick turnaround after loan arrivals. The conservation of a silk dress that exhibited splitting, brittleness and loss will also be highlighted. Restricted access to the interior of the garment, together with the fabric's extreme fragility and continuous fibre shedding meant that the treatment had to balance the need for structural support against the risk of further damage.
