Stitches in Time: the glove bindings of two religious collections
The presence of reused materials in binding repair is something that is very familiar. This usually takes the form of bibliographic cannibalisation, where components of other bindings are reborn, being adapted and incorporated into the structure or cover of more recent books. Finding reused materials that are unexpected interpolations is always a great joy, and none more so than the glove bindings in the library collections of two Jesuit-influenced religious houses.
Based on research in the archives of both orders, Victoria Stevens will tell the story so far of these remarkable objects and show how their presence in the collections reflects the wider stories of the remarkable women who may have made them.
And for the first time since the pandemic, we will host a drinks reception to close off the day! We hope everyone gets a chance to catch up with friends and colleagues!
