Back-to-Basics Upholstery Conservation course

The Icon Textile Group is delighted to announce that a Back-to-Basics Upholstery Conservation course will be held on the 19th-21st August, 2026 in London and led by Heather Porter ACR.

This course will include two days of the theory of upholstery conservation, hosted at the Victoria and Albert Musuem (South Kensington), and will include a tour of the V&A’s furniture conservation studio. This year, a hands-on practical element is included as a third day, which will be held at the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre, Kidbrooke.
What’s included:
The course fee will include handouts for the two lecture days and a small upholstered frame for the practical element on the third day. Equipment will be provided for the practical day however we ask that participants bring a basic tool kit (scissors, tape measure, tweezers etc.) if possible.
Location:
19th and 20th August: V&A, South Kensington
21st August: Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre, Kidbrooke
Catering:
19th and 20th August: Participants will be able to access the V&A’s staff canteen for the first two days of lectures. This includes subsidised coffee, tea, hot meals, sandwiches and cakes.
21st August: There is no staff canteen in the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre, but a small Sainsbury’s and Tesco is located nearby, or we please ask for participants to bring a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
