Archaeology Group: One chest and 100 sabres - or is it 101?

Investigative conservation of a concreted chest containing sabre blades from the Rooswijk shipwreck

Join us for the next in our series of online talks given by conservators working at Historic England on this group of sabre blades, one of the exciting finds from an 18th century shipwreck which sank near Ramsgate, Kent, UK. Thousands of objects were recovered over two seasons of excavation, among them numerous chests complete with their contents. The Rooswijk is currently on the At Risk register and an international collaboration between the The Netherlands and England was set up to investigate the wreck.

During this talk, Angela Middleton, Heather Stewart and Carola Del Mese will take you on a journey into shipwreck archaeology and conservation, outlining the complex nature of artefact rich sites and treatments. We will outline the steps taken to investigate, analyse, document and stabilise one of the chests containing approximately 100 sabre blades.
