Over the course of one and a half days, participants will learn the theory and technique of simultaneous separation and cleaning of blocked photographs, developed during the flood recovery efforts following the disastrous 2024 floods in Valencia, Spain.
The workshop will be held at The National Archives, Richmond, UK, with a theoretical introduction to the separation and cleaning of blocked photographs followed by practical step-by-step treatment techniques using real materials.
The workshop will also cover drying techniques, space management, the legal and ethical constraints of working with family heritage, and highlight the positive impact of conservation work on communities affected by natural disaster.
This workshop will help participants gain confidence when dealing with real-life disaster recovery scenarios.
This workshop is designed for a small group of up to 11 participants.
Paper and Photograph Conservator - Freelancer / Private Practice
Ana Carreres Llopis graduated in 2025 with a Master 's in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Universitat Politécnica de València - UPV (Spain). While finishing her Master's studies, she spearheaded the coordination and emergency treatment of personal photographic archives for families affected by the floods in Valencia through the "Salvem les fotos" initiative. Her training was complemented by previous internships at national and international institutions such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2023-2024). She currently works as a freelance conservator in private practice in Valencia, Spain.
