Conservation of Paintings

The paintings date from c. 1715 and are attributed to Juan Rodriguez Juarez (Mexico 1675 – 1728). The conservation treatments included varnish removal, removal of discoloured retouchings and overpaint, consolidation of paint layers, structural treatment to the canvasses including strip lining, tear mending. Structural treatment was also carried out to the stretchers. The paintings were varnished, losses filled and retouched, and reframed to conservation standards.
The paintings were included in the exhibition ‘Casta, The Origin of Caste’ at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery.

Conservation of the portrait of John Wilton, 1729, belonging to Chirk Castle, National Trust.
The portrait of John Wilton is a very rare full length, life size portrait of a servant. The portrait was painted in 1729 by Mr Whitmore, a painter-stainer by trade. The painting is oil on canvas, previously lined (wax-resin). The treatment included surface cleaning, varnish removal, consolidation of paint layers, varnishing, filling and retouching.

Conservation of Mere Poussepin by Gwen John, c.1915-20
The painting ‘Mere Poussepin’ by Gwen John is oil on canvas, with an unfinished sketch on the reverse of the painting. The painting belongs to The Barber Institute of Art and was conserved in preparation for being lent to the exhibition ‘Gwen John, Art and Life in London and Paris’ at Pallant House Gallery.
The painting was dusted and surface dirt was removed using dry cleaning methods. Areas of unstable paint were consolidated and losses were retouched. The painting was framed to conservation standards with TruVue acrylic glazing and twin-wall polycarbonate backing.
