The fragile and the Fugitive: Block lifting material from early medieval furnished burials in England

AGM, annual lecture, and student presentation: block-lifting and laboratory based micro-excavation.

Join the Archaeology Group for our 2026 AGM, followed by our annual lecture and student project presentation on the theme of block-lifting and laboratory based micro-excavation.

Archaeologist Lilly Hodges (Assistant Community Engagement Officer Cotswold Archaeology) and Conservator Jonathan Clark ACR (Senior Conservator Norfolk Museums Service) will discuss how block-lifting and laboratory based micro-excavation of Anglo-Saxon grave goods has worked to maximise the recovery of evidence for the organic elements of burial. These might include organic components of artefacts and costume; bundles or layers of textiles deposited as grave goods, or layers of textile laid out as part of the burial tableau; mortuary containers or grave structures; and vegetation laid in the grave as offerings, linings, coverings or fillings.

Sarah Ziskin (Durham University placement student at Amgueddfa Cymru) will also present investigations into the long-term stability of commonly used block lifting materials, including different brands of plaster bandage, cling film, and polyether foam.
