Icon26 Tour: Arsenical Bindings at the National Library of Scotland

Organised in collaboration with National Library of Scotland and Icon Scotland Group.

Join the Conservation team at the National Library of Scotland for a behind-the-scenes tour of our conservation lab and an introduction to an ongoing project addressing a hidden 19th-century hazard: arsenical bindings.

Many Victorian-era books bound in vivid green cloth or paper were coloured with a pigment known as Emerald Green, a friable, arsenic-based pigment capable of shedding toxic particles.
This session will guide you through our identification, risk mitigation, and rehousing workflow. From initial visual assessment through to safe return to shelf, we’ll share the practical steps shaping our response.
If your collections might include those alluring yet hazardous Victorian greens, or if you’re simply fascinated by their haunting glow, join us to see how we’re balancing safety, stewardship, and sustainability, one box at a time.

Attend this event, and many more, free with an Icon 26 ticket.
