Information about the 2024 Conference in Chester
Deadline EXTENDED until Monday 29 July
The ICON Stained Glass Group is pleased to announce its Annual General Meeting and Autumn Conference, scheduled for October 26, 2024, at the University of Chester. This year's theme, "Beyond the Whall," will examine the technical and art historical oeuvre of Christopher Whall's pupils and subsequent twentieth-century stained glass. The conference will address the innovative techniques, challenges, and solutions associated with the conservation of some of the UK's most distinguished stained glass works. We invite the submission of scholarly papers that correspond to this theme, particularly those presenting innovative methodologies and strategies for the preservation of this unique and artistically significant era of stained glass design.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
In commemoration of the centenary of Christopher Whall’s death in 2024, this conference will place a special emphasis on preserving and perpetuating Whall's legacy. Accordingly, the conference will also concentrate on the conservation of works by artists from his era, as well as the creations of his pupils who have continued his artistic tradition.
We welcome submissions from both established conservators, scholars and students. Chosen speakers will benefit from complimentary tickets, and ICON will make every effort to contribute towards travel expenses.
In addition to our own ICON event, we invite attendees to participate in Chester Cathedral's symposium, "Trena Cox: Reflections 100," on October 25, 2024, the day before our conference.
Please submit abstracts of 250 words to [email protected] at your earliest opportunity or by Monday 29 July 2024
We look forward to an engaging and enlightening conference.
