Introduction

The Icon Chantry Library's books, journals and conference papers are catalogued on the University of Oxford union catalogue. This is a versatile resource that allows you to search for specific resources or browse topics of interest.

SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online) provides the search interface to the catalogue.

To access SOLO just click here

Using SOLO: Search Oxford Libraries Online interface

SOLO is the catalogue for the major collections of the libraries of the University of Oxford.  It searches

- the printed and electronic holdings of the Bodleian Libraries and most College and other libraries affiliated to the University of Oxford*  (including the Chantry Library)
- title links to more than 1150 databases on OxLIP+
- ORA (Oxford University Research Archive - a repository of research papers and theses by members of Oxford University)
- Bodleian Library Allegro Chinese and Allegro Japanese catalogues
- Refugee Studies Cardbox catalogue (mostly grey literature published before 2004).

In addition, the SOLO Journal Articles tab searches Primo Central, a cross-disciplinary resource comprising citations to about 400 million articles, many of which are available in full-text to Oxford scholars. Further Information about SOLO is available here.

Detailed instructions on how to search SOLO can be found in the guide, which also provides online tutorials to help you with the searching process.

Searching for Chantry Library Holdings

Books in Icon's Chantry Library will appear under Magdalen College Library holdings. They are marked "ICON", followed by the shelf mark. So, for example, a search using SOLO for "Early Bindings in Paper: a brief history of European hand-made paper-covered books" by Michèle Valerie Cloonan will first of all find the record, and reference details for this document. To find out which libraries hold the document, click on the tab Locations, which will produce the display as follows:

ICON:BB/Clo            Click + for more details

When you click + for more details, you can view more information:

SOLO - Simple Searching

Click on the SOLO url: http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/

For a quick search enter your search words in the box underneath the heading Oxford Collections and click Search. SOLO will conduct a "google" style search.

If you are searching for a specific item (for example a book for which you know the title), enter keywords from title and/or the author's name.  For example:

You may also add other bibliographc details such as editors, translators, publishers, publication date, place of publication or ISBN  (please see the tips below for more information and to find out about how to deal with alternative spellings and word endings). However, in most cases entering an author's name and title keywords is sufficient.

Six Simple Searching Tips

You can enter a wide range of bibliographic details into the search box

1. For example, author and or title e.g. To find the book Britain and the Spanish Civil War by Buchanan

2. You can also add editors, translators or illustrator.  e.g. To find Auden's Collected Poems edited by Mendelson

3. You can even add dates (e.g. publication date), publisher or place of publication

4.  If you search by ISBN please omit hyphens

5. If you are unsure of a spelling or date you can use the wildcard ? e.g. Gr?y finds grey and gray and 176? finds 1760?, 1761, 1762 etc

6. You can also search for alternative word endings by using * e.g. method* finds method, methods, methodical, methodology etc.
