CEN/TC/346/WG4/TG1 Sites and Buildings Intended for the Storage and Use of Collections
Under the CEN 346 standards project and the UK's principal board B/560, the UK is leading on the development of a new standard for museum, gallery, archive and library buildings.  This new standard will replace BS5454 (recommendations for archival storage and exhibition) and cover all collection types. In order that UK expertise can be brought to the European discussions on this potentially significant standard, a panel of UK experts is needed. Tthe standard will cover:

- Hazards to collections
- Specifications for building quality, environment, fire protection and security

with the aim of providing recommendations that assist custodians and conservators to specify the qualities necessary to protect collections in new museums etc, and to provide targets for existing locations including in historic buildings.

The Environment element of the UK's contribution is expected to comprise the new PAS 198, currently out for public enquiry. A new PD5454 archives guidance paper, under development and expected for enquiry soon, will also contribute to the work on the new CEN standard.  In addition a number of recent or emerging CEN standards on relevant topics will inform or be referred to by the new standard, to avoid duplication. The UK Mirror Committee will meet about three times per year and communicate by email in between.  The committee can appoint ONE non-institutional expert to receive travel to accompany the TG1 convenor to meetings in Europe when required.

If you have detailed experience of the management practice and science of museum, archive and library buildings and would like to play a part in creating this important standard, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
