KINNEIL HOUSE - WALL PAINTINGS, ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL, NEW ROMAN WORLD HERITAGE SITE & MORE

Thursday 20 May 2010

2 - 5pm

Venue: Kinneil Estate, Bo’ness, EH51 0PR

Cost: Members: free, non members: £5 and students: £2 Maximum number: 30

On this visit to the Kinneil Estate in Bo'ness we will start with a visit to the Kinneil Museum to get an introduction to what we will be looking at. We will then go over to the house to look at the 16th and early17th-century wall paintings. In particular we'll look at the new environmental control system put in place at the end of 2009 to protect these paintings. We will then take a short walk around the Estate, taking in part of the 2nd-century Roman wall (recently made a World Heritage Site as part of the Antonine Wall) as well as the site where James Watt worked to develop his steam engine designs. We'll then pass by the ruins of Kinneil Church and lastly the buildings that make up the now largely ruinous 15th, 16th and 17th-century Kinneil Palace. The house is not normally open and this is a rare opportunity to see the wall paintings, some of the finest in Scotland.

We'll be outside for about an hour so dress accordingly. There will be mud underfoot if it is wet. There is only limited non-stepped access - the wall paintings are on the first floor and the Fort is 1/2 mile walk across grass and paths.

Please book in advance by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or calling 07877 944815.
Kinneil House is located on the western outskirts of Bo'ness off the A904.  Follow signs for the Kinneil Museum and meet in the museum entrance.
