The Chantry Library - interior

Welcome to the website of the Chantry Library, the resource centre for Icon. We provide services to members and non-members with an interest in conservation and the work of conservators. With a wide selection of holdings, including monographs, journals and key conference proceedings, the library aims to provide a balance of practice-based and research-led information to support the work of our members and to help raise awareness of heritage conservation issues beyond the boundaries of the profession.

A Library Without Walls?

Along with the provision of traditional services, the Chantry Library also provides annotated links to aggregated Web content through its Web resources page, and the facility to search only these resources through Heritage Conservation Search Engine (HC Search Engine). Whilst distance and time can prove barriers to visiting the physical library, we hope that the provision of remote services such as these will be useful to those interested in Heritage Conservation across the UK and beyond. For more details of these and other remote services, please explore our website.

Track New Books and Journals at the Library in Real Time

You can now keep up-to-date with the arrival of new books and journals, future library events, and other library related news as and when it happens. Visit our new Library News page to see it in action. You can even have the news come to you, rather than constantly visit the site - just subscribe to the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. Details of how to do this can be found on the Library News page - see the links under "RSS/News Feed Information" in the right-hand column for more details.

The Chantry Library – for all your conservation information needs

Library History

The Chantry Library began life as the library of the Institute of Paper Conservation (IPC). After an initial period based at the India Office, its home was established in the conservation department of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, where its development was overseen by the late Judith Chantry (1943-1999), a qualified librarian as well as an Ashmolean conservator.

The library was moved into storage in the late 1990s when refurbishment work began on the Ashmolean paper conservation studios began. In 2001 the library was rehoused at Grove Cottage (its current home) with the help of staff at the Oxford Conservation Consortium and a generous bequest from “Bobby” Chantry, mother of Judith. A part-time librarian was employed to maintain and catalogue the collection.

Following IPC’s convergence with Icon the post of Chantry Librarian was made full-time, with a remit for service development and to expand collections to meet the needs of new users with very different information needs. The library has expanded greatly since then, and continues to develop, both in terms of physical collections, and the services on offer to users. For more information please browse our Web pages, or feel free to contact the Librarian with any questions.
