The Book and Paper Group is devoted to the conservation of paper and related materials and the advancement of the craft and science of paper conservation both within the profession and in terms of public awareness.

A valuable resource set up by the group is the Judith Chantry Library and Resource Centre. It is the only professional conservation library owned and run by a professional body, and which houses books on subjects such as art history, book binding, book history, collection care, conservation, paper history, printing and reprographics, with subscriptions to over 150 major conservation journals available in print format. Maybe you are good in taking minutes OR your interests lie more in helping to find and sort out articles for Icon News written by Book and Paper Group members OR you could see yourself keeping track of the income and expenditure of the group by means of statements produced by the accounts managers, and liaising between the group committee and the Icon main office.

Clare Hampson was a founding member and Secretary of the Institute of Paper Conservation for over twenty years before her untimely death in 2002. She was deeply committed to promoting professional development opportunities as demonstrated by her generous legacy ‘to provide for an annual scholarship for the study of paper conservation’.
To support this aim, an innovative programme is being launched to encourage individuals engaged in the field of book or paper conservation, or in related activities to enable them to complete an article or a chapter of a book to peer reviewed publication standard.
Applications are invited by authors with advanced drafts based on completed research. Funding can be sought to support time away from work, travel, subsistence, translation and/or illustration costs. The award panel is keen to support individuals who have not yet published and to facilitate this, editorial support and mentoring may be provided to successful candidates. Grants can be sought up to £3,000.
Applications will be assessed by the Clare Hampson Scholarship Fund Panel, which draws its members from the Book and Paper Group of the Institute of Conservation. Successful applicants will be expected to agree in writing that grant payment is contingent upon:
* Acknowledgement of the support given by the CHSF in any publication or publicity.
* A summary of the publication to be submitted to the ICON newsletter.
* Evidence of grant expenditure including receipts.
* A refund of the grant if completion to publishable standard is not achieved.

Individual members of the Book and Paper Group of ICON who are engaged in the field of book or paper conservation, or in related fields.
