Internship host criteria PDF Print E-mail

To host an Icon internship you need to be able to demonstrate:

  • that the Internship does not take the place of what would normally be a post or fixed contract in your workshop/organisation
  • if a commercial sector host, that your workshop is on the Conservation Register
  • if a public sector host, that the Intern supervisor is ACR accredited or registered for and working towards ACR status
  • that supervision will be provided by one nominated individual, working on the same site as the Intern for at least 3 days out of 5
  • that you understand and respect the educational status of the Intern and the objectives of the programme: allowing the individual due time for training, monitoring and short work placements with other hosts when appropriate
  • that the Intern will have access to e-mail and other basic IT facilities during the placement

Icon's HLF Training Bursaries Scheme – how Placement Hosts are selected

i Skills to be focussed on in the first year will be:

Archives, Books, Ceramics, Ethnography, Fine Metals, Natural Sciences, Stained Glass, Stone, Preventive Conservation

ii Second year additional focus:

Conservation Science, Collections Care, Carpets and rugs, architectural conservation

iii Third and fourth years targeted areas:

Ceramics, Furniture, Natural History, Time-Based Media, Metals, Textiles, Collections Care

These areas were agreed by HLF, on the basis of Icon's Skills Demand Desk Study of May/June 2005 doc hlfskillssurvey 133.50 Kb

iv How HLF scheme placements are chosen and prioritised

Depending on the availability of placements in the disciplines targeted each year, the following criteria will be used to select and prioritise venues, whether offers are received or elicited. A sub-committee of Icon's Board of Trustees will oversee and review the selection of hosts on a six-monthly basis.

Criteria for prioritising the HLF scheme placement programme:

  • Placements which ensure that most or all targeted discipline areas are covered for that year
  • Placements which ensure a wide geographical spread for that year's intake
  • Placements that can guarantee Trainees will have work input into an HLF-funded project for most of some of the placement time
  • Placements where hosts are happy to take on a candidate without a conservation training or background (target: 50% of placements)
